Pricing and fees

Questions: 4

What does it cost to use Kling?

You only pay when a payment goes through. No setup fee, no monthly fee and no fixed charge.

Card payments through Kling POS
0.8%
Card payments through payment links, subscriptions, the payment window or the API
1.5%
Online bank claims
0.8%

The fee for an online bank claim is at least ISK 25 and at most ISK 250 per claim.

Acquirer fees are added on top of Kling's fee for card payments, and bank costs on top of Kling's fee for online bank claims.

Is there a monthly fee, a setup fee or a notice period?

No. You pay nothing for having an account, nothing to set the system up and nothing if you go a while without using it.

That suits anyone who sells irregularly, at events for instance, or only during a busy season.

Why are the acquirer's fees not included in the price?

The acquirer is the party that handles the card transaction itself, and it makes a separate agreement with every business. The terms depend on turnover, the type of business and the share of foreign cards, so one price for everyone would not reflect those differences.

Kling negotiates with the acquirer on your behalf and you get the terms we have agreed. You are told what those terms are before you sign.

We have high turnover. Can we get different terms?

Yes. If your annual turnover is over ISK 100 million we put together a tailored package on the best terms we can offer. Send us a line at hallo@kling.is.

Getting started

Questions: 7

What do I need to do to get started?
  1. Sign up on kling.is. It takes a few minutes.
  2. Try the system straight away in the test environment, without any real payments being made.
  3. Apply to switch on live payments. We send you a due diligence form and an agreement to sign.
  4. Once the acquirer has approved the application the live environment opens and you can start accepting payments.
How long does it take before I can accept payments?

The test environment is open the moment you sign up, so you can set everything up and try it right away.

The live environment opens once the acquirer has approved the application. That part is not entirely in our hands and the timing depends mostly on how quickly the paperwork comes in. You speed things up most by:

  • completing the due diligence form right away, and having anyone else with signing authority do the same
  • signing the agreement as soon as it arrives
  • describing what your business does precisely, not in a single word
  • putting the required information on your website (see the next question)
  • answering email from the acquirer, and checking your spam folder, because it can end up there

You can ask us where things stand at any time. Just send us a line at hallo@kling.is.

What has to appear on my website?

The acquirer requires all of the following to be available on the site before it is approved:

  • a description of the product or service being sold
  • terms covering delivery, refunds and cancellation
  • company name, kennitala, address, phone number and email
  • a privacy policy
  • which currency prices are shown in
  • the Visa and Mastercard marks in colour wherever payment methods are listed

The description of the business has to be precise. "Services" is not enough, but "a four week online course in mathematics for upper secondary students, delivered through a learning site" works well.

Who handles the agreement with the acquirer?

Kling applies to the acquirer on your behalf and handles the correspondence. You complete the due diligence form we send you and sign the agreement.

Do I have to change banks?

No. You stay with your bank and the settlement goes into the account you already have.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. Payment links, subscription links, Kling POS and online bank claims are all set up in the dashboard without any code.

If you want to connect Kling directly to your own system you can use the API and the payment window. That part does take development work.

Can I try it before going live?

Yes. Every account has two separate environments: a test environment and a live one. In the test environment you can create products, links and subscriptions and run payments with test cards, without money moving between anyone.

Note that the environments are separate. Products, customers and subscriptions you create in the test environment do not carry over to the live one on their own.

Ways to get paid

Questions: 5

Which ways of getting paid are available?
  • Payment link. You create it in the dashboard and share it anywhere.
  • The payment window. It opens on top of your own website and the customer pays without leaving it.
  • Kling POS. You charge on the spot from your phone or your computer, with no card terminal.
  • Online bank claims. A claim is sent straight to the customer's online bank.
  • The API. Full control for anyone who wants to build their own payment flow.
How do I create a payment link?

Go to Payment links in the dashboard and choose New link. Pick a product or an amount, save and copy the address.

The link goes anywhere: on a website, in an email, in a text message, on social media or into a QR code. You can leave it open, limit how many times it can be used or have it expire on a given day.

Can I use a QR code?

Kling POS shows a QR code the customer scans, and a contribution page can be shared as one. A plain payment link is a web address you send.

It works well on posters and table stands, on a market stall or in place of a collection box.

Is Apple Pay or Google Pay available?

Apple Pay appears as a payment method of its own on Apple devices that support it. It depends on your payment provider: it is available on Straumur, has to be switched on for you on Verifone, and is not available on Rapyd.

Google Pay is available on Straumur. It is not available on Verifone or Rapyd.

Can I charge in euros or dollars?

Yes. Kling supports Icelandic krónur, euros and dollars. We switch each currency on for your account, and after that you can both price and settle in it.

Online bank claims are in Icelandic krónur only.

Websites and store platforms

Questions: 4

Does Kling work with WooCommerce?

Yes. We have a ready-made plugin for WooCommerce. You install it and enter your API key to start accepting Icelandic card payments.

No development work is needed and the setup takes about five minutes.

Does Kling work with Shopify?

Yes, with payment links. You create a link in Kling and put it on your Shopify page as a button or a link.

A direct connection to Shopify's own checkout is not available yet. That means no new Shopify order is created automatically when a subscription renews. If you sell a physical product on subscription that has to be shipped on every renewal, that part needs to be solved separately. Get in touch and we will go through it with you.

Does Kling work with Squarespace, Wix or another website builder?

Yes. Payment links work on any website, whatever it is built with. You add the link as a button or a text link.

If you would rather the customer paid without leaving your site, you can use the Kling payment window. It opens on top of your own page. Setting it up takes a developer: your server creates the payment session with your secret key before the window opens.

Do I need my own web server?

No, not for payment links, Kling POS or online bank claims. The payment window is the exception: it needs a server of your own to create the payment session.

Yes, if you want to create payments automatically through the API, because the API key has to be kept somewhere safe.

Subscriptions

Questions: 4

Does Kling support subscriptions?

Yes. Recurring payments are built in. You choose how often you bill, monthly or yearly for instance. The card details are stored so the payments can be collected automatically.

Subscriptions can also be billed with a claim in the online bank instead of a card.

How do I set up a subscription?
  1. Create a product in the dashboard and mark it as a subscription.
  2. Set the price, the interval, the VAT rate and a trial period if you want to offer one.
  3. A payment link is created automatically. Put it on a button on your site, "Subscribe" for instance.
  4. The customer completes the payment and the card details are stored for the payments that follow.
Can customers cancel by themselves?

Yes. The billing portal is a self-service page where customers see their subscription, update their card details and cancel.

Each link is created for one customer and expires, so there is no permanent address to put on your website. Send the customer a fresh link when they ask.

Can I offer different packages, or let the customer choose a quantity?

You can offer as many packages as you like. Each subscription is tied to one specific product, so "3 items a month" and "6 items a month" are two products and two links. The customer picks a package by clicking the right link.

If you want customers to choose quantity and interval themselves on your product page and end up with a single combined subscription, that has to be built with the API. Get in touch and we will point you the right way.

Online bank claims

Questions: 4

What is an online bank claim and when does it make sense?

A claim is created against the customer's kennitala and shows up in their online bank, much like a traditional payment slip.

It works well for membership dues, course fees, invoices between companies and for every customer who would rather pay in their online bank than by card.

You can send claims from the dashboard or automatically through the API. You can also use them to bill subscriptions.

What does an online bank claim cost?

0.8% of the amount of the claim, at least ISK 25 and at most ISK 250. Bank costs are added according to the bank's own price list.

For larger amounts this is often the cheapest route, because Kling's fee never goes above ISK 250 per claim. Bank costs come on top.

Can I add a slip fee to the claim?

Yes. You set the slip fee in the settings for claims and it is added automatically to every claim you send.

If you would rather not charge one, leave the field empty. The fee is then ISK 0.

Why do my customers see the due date and the final due date on the same day?

The banks do not all display this the same way, so in some online banks the two dates look identical.

It does not mean the claim has gone to collection, and it costs the customer nothing extra.

Settlement, refunds and receipts

Questions: 5

When does the money reach my account?

The settlement comes from the acquirer straight into the bank account you registered. Kling does not hold your money.

How often you are settled is set by your agreement with the acquirer and is not the same for everyone. If anything is unclear, or a payment looks like it never arrived, send us a line at hallo@kling.is and we will look it up for you.

Do payments arrive one by one or several together?

The acquirer usually settles several card payments together in one transfer into your account, rather than each payment on its own.

The breakdown, who paid and how much, is always in the dashboard. That matters for clubs that have to keep track of individual payers, for their reporting to the tax authorities for instance.

Can I refund a customer?

Yes. You can refund in full or in part, from the dashboard or through the API.

Do customers get a receipt automatically?

Yes, when an email address is entered during the payment. If the payment page of the link does not ask for an email address, no receipt is sent. So remember to switch the email field on if you want receipts to go out.

You can pull up the receipt for any payment in the dashboard at any time.

Does VAT show on the receipt?

Yes. If a VAT rate has been set on the product, the breakdown appears on the receipt.

Clubs, donations and events

Questions: 3

Can I take donations and voluntary contributions?

Yes. With Contributions you create a payment page and decide which amounts appear on it. The supporter picks one of them or enters an amount of their own and pays by card. You can share the page as a QR code, on social media or in an ad.

You can also offer monthly support. The card details are then stored and the contribution is collected automatically every month. You can send a supporter a billing portal link so they can update their card or stop the support; to change the amount they get in touch with you.

Does the organization have to be on the register of public benefit organizations?

No, that is not a requirement. What is needed is a clear description of the cause or the project the money goes to, both in the organization's registration and on the page itself.

Can I sell tickets to an event and cap the number of places?

Yes. With Events you set a maximum number of participants and registration closes by itself once it is reached.

You can set a price for the event and a separate price for members, and keep track of dates and attendance in the same place.

For developers

Questions: 4

Is there an API and documentation?

Yes. The API is at api.kling.is and the documentation at api.kling.is/docs. It covers payments, subscriptions, customers, claims, discount codes and more.

We also offer a browser SDK for the payment window and an npm package for backend integrations.

Do you have a connection for AI tools?

Yes. Kling has an MCP connection that works with Claude and similar tools, and OpenAPI documentation that AI code editors such as Cursor can read directly.

Plenty of our customers have connected Kling to their own system without being trained developers.

Can I get notified about payments in my own system?

Yes. You register an address under Notifications in the dashboard and get told when a payment succeeds or fails and when a subscription renews, among other things.

Every notification is signed so you can verify that it came from us.

Can I have more than one company, or more than one website, on the same account?

Yes. You can have more than one merchant under the same user and switch between them in the dashboard.

Each merchant has its own keys, its own products and its own settlement.

Anything else

Questions: 2

Can I run a marketplace, or split a payment automatically between two parties?

Not at the moment. A single card transaction cannot be split automatically between two kennitölur, and the settlement always goes to one recipient.

There are other ways to arrange it, though. The most common is that each party has their own Kling account, so each is settled directly, or that one party takes the payment and settles with the other afterwards with a claim or a subscription. Get in touch and we will go through what fits.

How do I reach you?

Send us a line at hallo@kling.is or chat with us directly on kling.is.

We answer in Icelandic and there is always a person on the other end.

Did not find your answer?

Write to us and a person answers, in Icelandic, usually the same day.
